Popcorn and the principle of yin and yang
I'm sure there are
tons of articles here about the principle of yin and yang so there's no need
for me to talk about the principle which can be dry at times. Instead, here's
something I noticed during my stay in S. Korea.
So as you all probably
already know, because of the whole principle of yin and yang, there are differences
in Eastern and Western culture. This even includes the emergency number (in
America we dial 911... in Korea, it's 119)! You might not think much about things
like this at first but after a while, you begin to see that the yin-yang principle
applies to not just everything but EVERYTHING. So on to my story for the day....
I was at the Seoul
International Book Fair 2007 yesterday. On our drive back to Taejeon, we stopped
by a resting place for a light meal and had some popcorn (°³ÃÀÌ-gangnaengi)
as a snack while we were waiting.
I was looking at the
shape of the popcorn and it was round on the outside as if it was enclosing
something inside. It was the opposite of the popcorn I was used to eating in
America where the it's that shape you know? It's like the corn kernel bursts
open and the insides are facing out! Kind of hard to explain in words. Just
refer to the pictures and you'll know what I mean.
