The system of baduk

The system of baduk - tao of yinyang - The Dao Culture

The system of baduk

What if there isn’t any discipline in this complex universe?

It would be terrible chaos. The reason we confidently go to bed is we have natural trust that the sun will rise from East everyday. Because yinyang is a discipline made by the universe to maintain itself, the theory of yinyang in the eastern socity is started from very simple and confident natural system. Of course, entire world could not be explained by only Yin and Yang.

일원 (一元; 太極)
양의 (兩儀; 陰陽)
삼재 (三才; 天地人)
사상 (四象; 太陽太陰小陽小陰)
오행 (五行; 木火土金水)
육합 (六合; 東西南北上下)……

The viewpoint of oriental society is endless and tremendous, when it is divided.

However, look at this baduk board.

On this board, amazing world is expressed by jumbling many incidents connected by war & accomodation, conflict & feud, love & peace, plot, struggle under cover, challenge, survival & death, etc. The baduk is the reality of the universe where we live. Many different principles can be used to explain baduk, but it could be simplified as a fact that two different powers are harmonized between white and black unit.

Our universe plays a round of baduk.

We should realize that there are only white and black unit, though we’ve lost ourselves due to the innumerable changes occurred by confliction between two units. The relationship between white and black unit is called as a pair “짝”.

Learning in oriental society is similar to looking around an exhibition.

At a glance we don’t understand, but contemplation makes us understand the meaning of abstract paintings. Of course, we cannot make all people satisfy because each person has different knowledge and attainment.

From now on, we will magnify our vision to observe and study the earth from the universe. In the learning of oriental society, the viewpoint of observer could be changed frequently, and it should not be fixed. We should be able to contemplate the universe from a drop of water in a small scale. We also should be able to put the great universe on our palm. In big vision, the sky and the earth become one pair. Their characteristics are opposite; the heaven is yang and the earth is yin.

The sun and the moon present in the sky around our earth.

Those become a great match according to “yinyang” concept.

The sun emanates light to illuminate the earth during day time, and the moon reflect light of the sun to illuminate the earth during night time. Therefore, the sun is called as yang (陽), and the moon is called as yin (陰).  In this way, stars can also be divided into two groups. According to the great chinese confucianist So Gang Jeul (AD. 1011~1077), glowing stars (성, 星) are minor yang (소양, 小陽), and non-glowing stars are (신, 辰) minor yin 소음 (小陰). Putting togather, sun, moon, glowing stars, and non-glowing stars make pairs in the sky as yang.

On the other hand, on the earth there is a similar thing like sun in the sky. It’s fire. Because fire burn itself, it is belong to yang. The opposite thing of fire is water so fire and water make contrast to make pair. Stone (돌, 石) and soil (흙, 土) are also comparable to the glowing star and non-glowing star in the sky. It might not easy to analogize yinyang from stone and soil. As self-glowing stars getting lose their light to become non-glowing stars, hard stone will become soil due to weathering. Again, putting togather, water, fire, soil, and stone make pairs on the earth as yin. Let’s describe these as a picture.

The Heaven and Earth (천지,天地) make a pair.
The Sun and Moon (일월, 日月) make a pair.
Glowing stars and Non-Glowing stars (성신, 星辰) make a pair.
Water and Fire(수화, 水火) make a pair.
Soil and Stone (토석, 土石) make a pair.

Again, “일월성신” and “수화토석” make a pair.

In oriental culture, these pairs meet each other then creation and transformation are occurred. It’s the first play in the Baduk of the Heaven and the Earth.
